# Why High Performers Postpone Their Health

September 3, 2026 - 5 min read

I have watched this pattern for years in the clinic. The busiest people in the room are the ones most likely to postpone their own health. Not because they do not care, but because they are extremely good at triaging: the urgent gets solved, the quiet gets ignored.

## Health is accommodating until it is not

A business problem becomes urgent and it gets solved. A client needs something and the calendar rearranges. A funding round is closing and sleep can wait. Health, meanwhile, is remarkably patient in the short term.

- Waist size creeps up a centimetre at a time.
- HbA1c drifts from 5.4 to 5.7 to 5.9, still "normal" on the report.
- Blood pressure becomes "a little borderline."
- Energy drops slightly, and sleep stops restoring you the way it used to.

None of it feels like a problem yet. So the highest performer in the room does the thing they are best at: prioritise the urgent.

## Metabolic health runs on a slower clock

The problem is timing. Metabolic dysfunction rarely announces itself, it accumulates. By the time a doctor gives it a name, diabetes or fatty liver or metabolic syndrome, you have often been collecting signals for years.

So I ask people to track something different. Not "is everything terrible?" but "are the things that matter drifting in the wrong direction?" A rising waist, a climbing HbA1c, blood pressure that needs watching, sleep that no longer restores, energy that dips after meals. Those are trends, not emergencies. Trends are easy to act on early and much harder to reverse later.

## What to actually do

I do not think the answer is becoming obsessive about health. The opposite. You need a few markers measured a few times a year, and the honesty to look at the direction they are moving. I walk through what a personalised protocol looks like in a [case study of a client who reversed his lipid markers in one month](/blog/one-month-no-statins-metabolic-case-study), and why the same advice does not fit everyone in my post on [metabolic health for Indians](/blog/metabolic-health-for-indians).

If you want to understand the metabolic side of your own picture, [MorfResearch](https://morfresearch.com) is where my team and I do that work. If you are a physiotherapist seeing patients with stubborn pain and fatigue, the same lens applies, and I teach it in [NKT training](/blog/what-they-dont-teach-you-in-physio-school).

You do not need panic to act early. You need enough attention to notice the pattern.
